There are also examples of a 'garbage architecture' made from recycled aluminium cans, car tyres and beer bottles, the common incorporation of parts from older buildings in vernacular structures (a technique also found in postmodernism), and the assimilation of industrial and agricultural components into the 1970s 'high-tech' chic.
Historically, there are two basic types of building envelope: those in which the envelope is withdrawn within the confines of the structure, such as in a Greek temple and in high-tech structures; and those in which the envelope, like a skin, is stretched between or wrapped around the structure, such as in Gothic cathedrals and curtain wall architecture.
